Are you a dreamer or a doer?

Dreams really can come true sometimes, but the reality for most of us is that we have to take some kind of action to make them happen. It’s not that often that a dream coming true happens without our intervention (though it’s nice when that does happen!).

Plenty of people have dreams about what they’re going to do in life but not everyone is a doer – someone who makes them happen. There can be lots of reasons as to why some people are just dreamers – perhaps their dreams are just not realistic, or they lack the time or money to follow them. If you find yourself stuck in the dreamer state and want to be a doer, then there are a few things you can do about that.

List your dreams

Make a to-do list of all the things you’d like to achieve. Keep referring back to this list. If you find you keep glossing over an item then you might just not be invested enough into the dream to want to make it happen. Sometimes we just like the idea of something more than the actual reality.

Overcome obstacles that are stopping you from following your dreams

If you are really sure you want to make a dream happen but are finding it too hard to find the time or money or have some other obstacles in your way, then you may need to put that dream on hold for now. Instead, invest what time and energy you can into fixing the issues that are stopping you. It could take years but if you really want to do it, then you’ll find a way.

Let go of romantic notions

I’m sure there are many who dream of writing the next bestselling novel. We have romantic notions of sitting at a desk each day, staring into space until inspiration hits and we bash out the next words. We only need to write one draft as it’s perfect from the beginning. The novel is accepted by a major publisher and the sales pour in. Stop. Just stop. The reality is that your hands will have cramped up from the endless rewrites and edits long before you ever send it off to many publishers who will send back a rejection.

A lot of the time, our dreams just don’t tally with reality. The idea of something is far more appealing than the actual hard graft involved in doing it. If you really want to follow a dream, then make sure you fully understand what that dream will involve.

Are you waiting for inspiration?

Let’s not kid ourselves – we can make all the excuses we want but unless we take action, then nothing will happen. You might dream of composing the next number one song and are just waiting for that great tune to pop into your head. Good luck with that. What you need to be doing is keep plugging away at composing new songs. Eventually one might have the potential to be great.

Doers make room in their lives for their dreams

A doer will schedule in time in their life to get their new business venture off the ground. A doer will make working towards their dreams a part of their life and routine. A doer will put in the time, effort, and graft necessary to achieve their dreams.

There’s nothing wrong with being a dreamer. It is fun to have dreams. It gives us something to aspire to.

Whatever you are, a dreamer or a doer, aim to make your life your best life.
